Merton Council

Merton Public Space Protection Order Consultation 2022

Description:

Proposed renewal of the Public Space Protection Order tackling anti-social behaviour in relation to alcohol.

The Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), Crime and Policing Act 2014 introduced a set of streamlined tools to address Anti-Social Behaviour and the impact that this behaviour can have on individuals and communities. Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO’s) are one of these tools. PSPO’s differ from other tools as they are council led and are designed to prohibit certain activities or can require that people do certain things when engaging in certain activities within a defined public area.

Since October 2020, Merton has had a PSPO specially designed to address the associated ASB related to alcohol. This PSPO has been based in the five wards of Cricket Green, Figges Marsh, Graveney, Lavender Fields and Ravensbury and is due to expire in October 2022.

We have to ensure that the PSPO is proportionate and follows an evidence led approach. Following our assessment of the available data, our proposal is to renew the current PSPO from October 2022, but also to assess and consider if the same PSPO powers should be in place in any other areas of the borough.

Details of the current PSPO area can be found on our website.

This consultation is seeking to collect views on the renewal of the PSPO and prohibitions as well as looking to collect more general perception information.

Consultation start date 27 June 2022
