Council Tax Support – Update to the scheme consultation 2020
Description: Each year the Government makes changes to the legislation that governs the calculation and award of the prescribed Council Tax Reduction (CTR) Scheme for pensioners and Housing Benefit (HB). These changes affect several aspects of these awards and Merton has a commitment to keep the local Council Tax Reduction scheme for non-pensioners, known as Council Tax Support (CTS), aligned to the Government’s schemes. This ensures there are little or no differences between the prescribed scheme and Housing Benefit and the local CTS scheme and residents will get broadly the same CTS as they would have done if Council Tax Benefit still existed. This year we have learned from some of the issues raised by the COVID-19 pandemic relating to the Council's inability to make changes to the local CTS scheme to match the changes made by central government to give more generous allowances. We are consulting on two options relating to updating the scheme. You can have your say by clicking on the 'Take Part' link below.
Summary of results: On 18 November 2020 the decision to uprate the Council Tax Support Scheme was agreed at a meeting of the full Council. Details can be in the report to Council.
